Summary/Prompt: P9. Prompt: Severus Snape is telling his grandchildren, Snape-style, how he and Harry fell in love.
A/N:Thank you to my lovely beta! ♥
"Grandfather!"
The anguished tone forewarned Severus Snape of the tears coursing down the face of his six-year-old granddaughter. He caught her under the arms as she launched herself towards him and lifted her up. She was followed by her nine-year-old brother and eight-year-old cousin, both boys having mutinous expressions on their faces. Behind them was the headmistress of their school.
"Eileen?" Severus asked as his granddaughter buried her face in his throat with a sob.
"Grandfather! That big boy, he was saying nasty things about Grandpa!" Phineas practically vibrated with anger.
Eileen's brother, Edward, met his eyes, hurt and anger clouding the green that was so much like his dad's and grandpa's were.
"I'm so sorry, Professor Snape!" Lavender Thomas wrung her hands. "I sent a note home to Vincent Goyle about his son's behavior and told him it won't be tolerated in this school."
"Was he physical—"
"No!" Lavender reached a hand toward him in a placating gesture. "I would have expelled him immediately! Geoffrey was spewing some nasty things about Harry, which he was told were hurtful and untrue, and he was suspended for a day to think about what he'd done."
Severus rubbed a soothing hand up and down Eileen's back. "I will expect appropriate action taken, Headmistress Thomas."
"Of course, Professor!"
Severus gathered his grandchildren and turned on his heel. It was clear that he needed to speak to the children about what had happened, but he had no intention of doing so in front of anyone outside the family. His daughter Calla's house was a short walk from the school and it only took a few minutes to get there in the crisp afternoon air. Eileen loosened the grip she'd had around his neck and lifted her head as they walked up the path to the large cottage.
"I smell biscuits, Grandfather!" she exclaimed.
"No doubt your aunt is making them for tea," Severus assured her. "Phin, if you will get the door for us, please?"
Phineas ran ahead to push open the door as Severus ushered Edward in front of him. Severus loved the large, open, uncluttered floorplan of his daughter's home. Setting Eileen down, Severus hung his cloak and outer robes on the stand just inside the door, before helping Edward and Eileen with theirs.
"Is that you, Papa?" His daughter's voice carried down from the direction of the upstairs nursery.
"Who else would be able to get through your wards?" Severus muttered. "Yes, Calla." He called out as he moved towards the sitting area.
"And you'll stay for tea."
It wasn't a question and Severus grumbled under his breath about overbearing witches as the children giggled. Calla got her bossiness from her father, Severus thought as he settled on the couch in front of the fire. Summoning a quill and parchment, Severus quickly scratched a message, emphasizing several points with thick underlining, and then whistled sharply. Edward stood beside him, head tilted as he tried to read Severus' handwriting while Eileen scooted up and snuggled into his side. Severus looked up as a sleek black eagle owl flew in through an owl port and landed on the table. Severus smirked, having a Malfoy as a son-in-law had its advantages, including a magnificent post carrier.
Withdrawing his wand, Severus cast the appropriate spell, turning the missive red, before tying it to the owl's leg.
"Goyle Manor, Mercury, and there's no need wait for an answer." Severus watched the bird fly off with a smirk.
"What does 'imbecilic' mean, Grandfather?" Edward asked.
"It means someone who is an ignorant—"
"Papa!" Calla walked down the stairs. "Phin, take your things to your room, please." She leaned over to kiss Severus on the cheek and settled his youngest grandson into his lap. "Mind Luke while I start tea."
Severus rolled his eyes at his daughter's highhandedness, kissing the baby before sitting him on his lap. Naming the baby Lucas was Scorpius' transparent attempt to honor his own grandfather. Particularly amusing in a baby who was the spitting image of Severus, with the exception of his chestnut hair. Phineas was back, his gray eyes still angry.
"Come up here, Phin, tell me what that Goyle lump said to you," Severus said, giving him a pointed look. "And don't leave anything out."
Phineas exchanged a glance with Edward as he sat down, before holding a finger up for his baby brother to curl his hand around. "He said the Grandpa was an arrogant, spoiled bully who was treated special at school and who used an unforgivable potion that forced you to love him, then made you marry him when he was up the duff, even though you hated him all your life."
Severus clamped down on the surge of anger that went through him. Young Goyle would be attending Hogwarts in a year, where Severus had no tolerance for bullying of any kind. Although, Severus knew, if he were truly honest with himself, those comments lead directly back to him, uttered fifty years in the past. The blame was his, in part at least, and Severus knew he needed to tell his grandchildren the truth.
"Grandfather?" Phin looked at him. "What's up the duff?"
Severus heard Calla choke in the kitchen, but ignored her as he brought Phin closer and motioned Edward to sit on the table in front of him. "There is enough truth in what you heard to be particularly hurtful to your grandpa Harry, so I will tell you the true story of what happened to your grandpa and I all those years ago." He gave the boys a sharp look. "Pay attention, I'll not be repeating myself."
"Yes, Grandfather!" The boys said together.
Eileen nodded her head, but didn't stop playing with Severus' fingers.
"When I was Phineas' age, I met a little girl named Lily Evans—"
"Great-grandma Lily!" Edward shouted.
"—who became my best friend. She was a lovely girl, sweet and full of joy, and we remained friends for many years. We were in the same year at Hogwarts, where she met your great-grand father, James Potter. James was the definition of an arrogant, bullying, ar—"
"Papa!"
"—not very nice person." Severus rolled his eyes, making the boys giggle. "There was a point in our seventh year when Lily chose James over our friendship, and I, in turn, made the very bad decision to following a rising dark wizard—"
"Voldemort!" The boys cried in unison.
It was amazing that even decades after his demise, that name could still send a shudder down Severus' spine. "The very same and a decision that I shall regret for the rest of my life." Eileen gripped his fingers as Luke sucked on his fist. "When that same wizard targeted Lily and James, ending up killing them both—"
"That's when Grandpa became the Boy Who Lived!" Edward bounced on the edge of the table.
Severus gave him a stern look, which stilled his movements. "One more interruption and I will cease telling you this story."
"Yes, sir," Edward muttered as Phineas nudged him with his foot.
"When Harry survived, I made an Unbreakable Vow to protect him with my life. It was only right, as he was the son of my dearest friend. The only problem was that he was also the son of the man who had made my school years wretched. So during the years when Harry was growing up with Lily's sister, I worked on hating him for living while his mother died. I assumed he was a pampered, spoiled boy, fully aware of his own fame."
Luke grabbed for his nose, but Severus easily evaded the maneuver, retrieving his hand from Eileen to shift the baby on his lap. "When Harry arrived at Hogwarts, I despised him, believed him to be just like his father, and made sure my Slytherins knew just how I felt. Gregory Goyle was in the same year as your grandpa and likely remembers my many tirades against what I perceived as his preferential treatment at school. Even when it became apparent to me that I might have harbored some – misperceptions where your grandpa was concerned, circumstances dictated that I remain outwardly odious."
Both boys looked up at him with confused expressions as Calla joined them with the tea tray. "He means nasty."
Severus nodded as he watched her pour. "I was that, indeed, but I slowly began to realize that Harry wasn't what I thought he was, that he'd endured an abysmal childhood much like my own. By the culmination of the war, I had developed something of an admiration for the young man who had displayed such courage and self-sacrifice. Although my feelings had changed, I never expected Harry to return my regard. In the aftermath of the Battle of Hogwarts, however, your grandpa proved he was addled and made a right nuisance of himself—"
"Papa!" Calla admonished him again, reaching to lift Luke out of his lap. "Daddy was young and in love."
"He was stubborn, persistent, and utterly ridiculous with his infatuation." Severus reached for his cup. "Fortunately for me." He smiled at Eileen. "As it turned out, it took him awhile to convince me he was serious." Severus met Phin's eyes as he blew across the top of his tea. "There was no love potion or a spell used to entice anyone, besides it is a well-known fact that your grandpa Harry is immune to most of the Unforgivables, having survived the Killing Curse and resisted the Imperius Curse cast by the Dark Lord himself."
Edward and Phineas grew wide-eyed, exchanging glances as they ate their finger sandwiches. Calla hid a smile behind her tea cup, her eyes crinkling at the corners just the way Severus envisioned Lily's eyes would have if she'd lived into her thirties.
"As for that rude phrase, which will not be repeated in my presence, it means to be pregnant, and yes, your grandpa was pregnant three times, carrying two children successfully. Be assured, both Harry and I wanted children. It took much sacrifice on Harry's part, due to the dependence on his magic, to carry your mum and Uncle Evan, Phineas, and of all his accomplishments, his children are what Harry is the proudest of."
Severus took a sip of his tea, trying to swallow the lump that had formed in his throat when he thought of what Harry had been through in order to have their children. "That is saying a great deal, when you think of all your grandpa has accomplished and being the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, among other things. I know that I am very proud of him and am gratified that of all those he could have had, Harry chose me as his husband those forty odd years ago."
Calla was blinking her eyes rapidly, Severus saw but Phin was looking directly over Severus' shoulder towards the front door, just as he was brushed with familiar magic. Catching Calla's lips twitching, Severus huffed, leaning forward to set his cup down.
"And exactly how long were you going to let me prattled on with your father standing there?" He asked his daughter in a frigid tone.
"Oh, Papa, like Daddy doesn't know you love him?"
"Or that I don't love Papa more now than ever before," Harry's rich voice drifted over his shoulder and Eileen squealed happily, using Severus' arm to pull herself up on the couch.
Severus felt Harry's magic envelop him in warmth before the kiss that was pressed to the top of his head. Eileen was scooped up, kissed soundly and set back down beside Severus. Calla smiled as Harry came around the end of the couch, leaned down to kiss her as he snatched Luke from her arms.
"Be careful, Daddy, he's going to need his nappy changed soon," Calla told Harry as she poured him a cup.
"I think I remember the mechanics of it, princess."
Calla rolled her eyes. "You sound more like Papa every year!"
Severus watched with an indulgent smirk as Harry sat in the chair opposite of him and cuddled Luke close.
"I'm a princess, too, Grandfather!" Eileen tugged at his hand and Severus slipped his arm around her to draw her closer.
"You are, indeed, my precious." He kissed her forehead while the boys giggled.
Eileen turned her blue eyes on Harry. "Grandpa, why didn't you bring Mummy and Daddy with you?"
"They had to work tonight, sweetums, remember? Mummy is helping the king and your daddy is there as part of the protection detail. They'll be back later tonight and Mummy said she was bringing you a present from your granddad."
Eileen wasn't placated, her lip sticking out in a pout. "I don't care if Uncle Wills is the king or Mummy's uncle, I don't like it when they're gone for dinner! Why do they always have to help Uncle Wills?"
"Your mummy is more than just a helper, princess," Harry told her softly. "She's his advisor on the Wizarding world."
Eileen stuck her lip out further and the boys tried not to laugh.
Severus snorted. "I think the blame goes more towards your granddad Harry and the Weasley gene he apparently carried from his mother's Squib line. I'm sure the fact that his oldest daughter turned out to be a powerful witch was a bit of a surprise to the royal family."
"I don't care!" Eileen crossed her arms over her chest in a good imitation of Severus when he was irritated.
"It's all right, my precious, Grandpa and I will stay with you for dinner as well, if that will make you feel better."
"And I can sit on your lap?" Eileen looked hopeful.
Severus nodded and helped her move, handing her one of Calla's shortbread biscuits. His lips twitched upwards as he looked at Harry.
"Your previous discussion doesn't have anything to do with a harried and repentant Greg Goyle flagging me down in the atrium of the Ministry, does it?" Harry asked as he watched Eileen settle on Severus lap.
"That would depend," Severus met Phineas' eyes, "on what he might have said."
"He reassured me that the Goyle family had the utmost respect for the Potter-Snape family and would absolutely back me if I chose to run for Minister of Magic." Harry gave him a sidelong look. "Have I decided to run for Minister of Magic?"
Severus felt all eyes swing towards him, but he held Harry's eyes without blinking. "It's an idea whose time may have come, Harry. I don't believe there is any better candidate."
"You'd have to retire from Hogwarts as I'd need you at my side."
"That is something we might be able to discuss to an amiable solution," Severus told him softly.
"Would that be like being king, Grandpa?" Edward asked. "Uncle Wills said that it's not always fun to be king."
Harry nodded. "It wouldn't always be fun, but it would be challenging and rewarding, I think. It would be something that we'd have a family meeting to discuss." Smiling at their grandson, Harry suddenly wrinkled his nose. "Lucas! How can something as small and adorable as you produce such a terrible smell?"
Severus found himself smiling as the children laughed. Harry waved Calla off as he went upstairs to change the baby. He redirected the conversation to the children's school work and the upcoming Easter holidays. They had all been invited to a family Easter Egg Hunt at Balmoral Castle with Queen Catherine insisting the entire Potter-Snape clan attend. In reality, the castle was close to Hogwarts and Severus was planning on inviting those in the royal family who could see the school to a tour. He believed there was more magical ability than the royals believed.
It was late by the time Severus and Harry took Eileen and Edward home. Elizabeth and Evan, arrived home just before the children's bedtime, much to Eileen's delight. Elizabeth looked every inch the royal princess in a beautiful gown and Evan was dashing in the Muggle version of his Auror dress robes. Kissing everyone goodbye, Severus wrapped his arms around Harry, Apparating them to their bedroom in Hogwarts.
"Shall I demonstrate how much support you can expect for me?" Severus asked Harry as he snapped his fingers to Banish their clothing to the wardrobe.
"I'd rather you show me how hard you can fuck me," Harry said, pressing against him as Severus leaned in to kiss him hard.
With the familiarity of long time lovers, Severus knew the places to lick and stroke to have Harry panting with arousal in no time. It was no less intense than the very first time as Severus slid into the heated velvet as Harry impaled himself on Severus' cock. His breath caught in his chest as he thrust upward, and slowly and steadily turning into hard and fast in a heartbeat. Harry rode him with abandon, his eyes bright with desire as Severus met him stroke for stroke.
All too soon, Harry groaned and clenched around Severus' cock as he spurted between their bellies, making Severus lose control. Gripping his hips, Severus arched his back, burying himself deep as his climax rippled through him in waves. Harry collapsed against his chest, his breathing ragged as Severus held on to him tightly. Pressing a kiss to the graying temple, Severus maneuvered them to their sides, as he felt Harry's magic wash over them in a cleansing spell.
"Have I told you lately how much I love you?" Harry curled into his side, head on Severus' shoulder.
"You're just saying that because I'm an expert lover," Severus said, wrapping his arm around Harry's still slender waist.
"And because you can turn an idiot child's taunting into making the grandkids think they've been let in on a family secret, while at the same time, gaining a vote of support from the old pure-blood sector."
"Despite all these years as Hogwarts’ headmaster, I am still Slytherin."
"And I love you all the more for it," Harry said sleepily.
"Almost as much as I love you, my heart." Severus closed his eyes, his heart light as he looked forward to the next chapter in their lives.
